Explorers Test

There is a test Friday over the explorers and exploration of North America that we have been talking about in Social Studies.  The review sheet is coming home today so that your students can start studying.  There is information that will still be covered tomorrow and some Thursday on there for them to start studying as well.

Gearing Up for STAAR!!! TEST STRATEGIES

We are now beginning our final push to prepare the students for the upcoming STAAR test that the students will take in April. Here are the strategies that we are teaching the students to help them be prepared.  You are more than welcome to review these with your students at home as well as have the students practice them on homework assignments.

For Math the strategies are:
1) Underline the Question (cause it tells what must be found) then;
2. BOX important words in the question (mainly nouns)
3. Show your work (whether using pictures, numbers, or words)

For Reading the strategies are:
1. Read the questions and answers
2. Read the story
3. Read the questions again
4. Hunt for your answers in the story
5. Underline the answer in the story
6. Check your answers

Lines of Symmetry Homework

Lines of Symmetry are those lines that can divide a shape and create two congruent pieces. (Congruent = Same size and same shape)

Rotational Symmetry refers to being able to rotate the shape and having it fit within its "shadow". Trace a shape and then turn it and see if it fits in the outline. Everytime it fits (up to 4 rotations) it is a rotational symmetry.

Early Exploration of North America

In Social Studies for this week and next we will be discussing the Early Exploration of North America.  We will take a trip back in time to pirates, gold, and adventure! Our Journey will begin around the 9th or 10th century when fierce Vikings ruled the sea.  We will travel from Europe to the New world with Columbus and his contemporaries as we study the first "gold rush" to hit North America.  We'll learn about the native "storytellers" and witness the demise of many of their believers as we watch the Europeans make slow and steady progress toward making the Native's land their own.  Bon voyage and welcome aborad!!!

Welcome Back

We hope you had a wonderful Winter Break! We are looking forward to getting back to work and working hard to finish out the year strong.  We have created this blog to help keep parents better informed of things that are going on and that are coming up for the 3rd graders.  If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page then you will see that we have a calendar with events. Check back to this site often, because we will be uploading and adding things each week.  We will put all upcoming projects and events, as well as any major tests on there.  We will still be sending home our weekly newsletter as well.

Today in your students folder should have been a permission slip to post pictures of your student on this blog.  If you would like to see pictures of activities and things we are doing in the classroom, please sign the permission slip and return it as quickly as possible so that we can start uploading pictures.  Any student who does not have a signed permission slip will not have their picture put on the blog.

We are looking forward to these last few months of the school year!
